Sub-Genre Media’s engaging documentary “Odd Hours, No Pay, Cool Hat,” a Vignette Production and Hold Fast Features Project from filmmaking co-directing team Gary Matoso & Cameron Zohoori, will make its Public Broadcasting debut nationwide airing nationally on PBS stations, beginning in September, timed to 9/11, and in October on more than 300 stations (Over 700 air dates include 145 markets, as well as throughout America’s heartland to a an audience of over 36 million).

PBS stations and channels embrace “Odd Hours, No Pay, Cool Hat” with primetime programming commemorating 9/11, October’s National Fire Prevention Month, and National First Responders Day (Oct 28). Since the film first made its North American wide release in 2023 the film directly influenced Maryland’s state governor to change legislation that allows for non-social security holding EMTs to become fully licensed. This allows those persons to advance their careers as full-time professionals and increases the lives they will save.

The film made a significant impact nationwide with 50% of the nearly 300 fire departments who screened the film during recruitment events enlisting new volunteer firefighters or receiving strong inquiries.The National Volunteer Fire Council experienced a 41% increase in volunteer inquiry submissions during the film’s wide release.

“Odd Hours, No Pay, Cool Hat” is inspired by an original story by Peter Yoakum and takes audiences behind the lines of America’s volunteer fire service community. The film is truly a tribute to the nearly 700,000 volunteer firefighters around the country – highlighting their selfless bravery, compassion, motivation, and unfaltering sense of community. The film is presented by John Deere in association with the National Volunteer Fire Council, Hold Fast Features, and Vignette.

This extraordinary film released theatrically in New York, California, Washington, and Oregon; has screened as part of a coveted private screening series including the John Deere Headquarters Screening & Panel event honoring regional fire departments, the National Volunteer Fire Council Board of Directors Screening, Elevate Brand Storytelling in Sundance, Utah, and the NVFC Training Summit; and across the nation with nearly 300 impact recruitment screenings.

The 60-minute public television version grants audience’s exclusive access to follow the inspiring journey of the most remarkable neighbors whose help you hope you never need - volunteer firefighters - as they encounter heart-breaking challenges and exhilarating triumphs to fulfill a single mission: serving their community. Key West, FL - October 2, 2024 — The Key West Film Festival announced today the recipient of its ninth annual Golden Key for Excellence in Costume Design, honoring Academy Award-nominated costume designer Danny Glicker.

As part of the honor, Glicker will participate in a discussion of his work, to be moderated by Stephanie Zacharek of Time. Mr. Glicker will accept his award in person at the festival, which will feature a pre-recorded presentation by Oscar nominated Costume Designer, Dr. Deborah Nadoolman Landis.

DANNY GLICKER is an Academy Award® and Emmy Award-nominated costume designer, whose most recent work can be seen in Jason Reitman’s SATURDAY NIGHT which is based on the true story of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of Saturday Night Live on October 11, 1975.

Glicker previously explored a vastly different side of the mid-70’s with director Park Chan-wook for HBO and A24’s limited series The Sympathizer, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Hoa Xuande and executive produced by Downey Jr. and Park Chan-wook.

In 2009, Glicker was honored with an Academy Award® nomination, as well as the Costume Designers Guild Excellence in Period Film nomination, for his work on Gus Van Sant's Milk, starring Sean Penn, who received the Best Actor Academy Award® for his portrayal of Harvey Milk.

Additional honors include an Emmy Nomination for his costume design of the Peacock limited series Angelyne, Costume Designers Guild Excellence in Contemporary Film Award for his work on Transamerica and was nominated for his work on Up in the Air, directed by frequent collaborator and SATURDAY NIGHT director/co-writer/producer Jason Reitman, for whom he also designed the costumes for Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Thank You for Smoking, Labor Day, and The Front Runner starring Hugh Jackman as 80’s presidential candidate Gary Hart.

Dr. Landis, a former Costume Design Governor of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and an Academy Award^®-nominee, presented the first annual Golden Key for costume design in 2016 to Mary Zophres, who went on to receive an Oscar^® nomination for her work in La La Land, and to the last five year’s honorees: Mark Bridges, who won the 2018 Oscar^® for Best Costume Design for The Phantom Thread; and Alexandra Byrne, who’s work in Mary Queen of Scots was recognized by an Academy Award nomination; Arianne Phillips, nominated for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood; Francine Jamison-Tanchuck for her artistry in Regina King’s One Night in Miami; Paul Tazewell, whose costume design of West Side Story garnered him an Oscar nomination, Jennifer Johnson was honored in 2022 for her work in Blonde; and last year, the festival honored Academy Award nominee Jacqueline Durran for Barbie.

A Conversation with Black British Actors in Hollywood Hosted by The African American Film Critics Association and the British Academy Film Awards

The African American Film Critics Association and BAFTA came together on Thursday, September 26^th , for a discussion showcasing Black British actors who are making a name for themselves in Hollywood.

The evening’s moderator was Brandee Victorian of The Hollywood Reporter and Essence, and actors Jimmy Akingbola roles in Bel-Air and The Tower, Tracy Ifeachor roles in The Pitt and Spider Man 2 and Joivan Wade Bel-Air and Doom Patrol.

Their journeys and the breakthroughs as they pursued their dreams in the United States’ world of entertainment.

These three talented actors are sure to have a long future in Hollywood.

The 75th Annual ACE Eddie Awards, recognizing outstanding editing in film and television, will be held at UCLA’s Royce Hall in Los Angeles on Saturday, January 18, 2025

LOS ANGELES, September 12, 2024 – American Cinema Editors (ACE) have announced the ceremony date, venue and full voting timeline for the 75th Annual ACE Eddie Awards, recognizing outstanding editing in 13 categories of film and television. To be eligible to compete in the television categories, projects must have aired between January 1 - November 1, 2024. To be eligible to compete in the film categories, projects must have been released in theaters between January 1 - December 31, 2024. The ACE Eddie Awards, presented by American Cinema Editors, will be held Saturday, January 18, 2025 at UCLA’s Royce Hall in Los Angeles.

“We're thrilled to honor the year's finest editing and mark our 75th anniversary with the entire industry," said ACE Executive Director Jenni McCormick. “As the third oldest awards show in Hollywood history, right after the Oscars® and the Golden Globes®, we’ve been celebrating the best and brightest in our industry for 75 years. Our organization continues to grow and thrive, even while navigating challenges like the pandemic and strikes, because of the incredible community that our members have created. We’re looking forward to the future and the next 75.”

Three special honors will be handed out at the ACE Eddie Awards ceremony including two Career Achievement recipients, presented to film editors of outstanding merit, and the Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year honor, presented to a filmmaker who exemplifies distinguished achievement in the art and business of film. Honorary award recipients will be announced later this year. The winner of the Anne V. Coates Student Editing Competition will also be announced that evening.

Submissions for the ACE Eddie Awards open October 1 and close on November 1 at 5pm PT. ACE is thrilled to once again partner with Indee Secure Screening Rooms to help make all submissions available for online viewing by uploading to the ACE app.

With the world’s largest naval base located in Norfolk, Virginia, as its backdrop, Directors Liz Havstad and Dream Hampton’s short documentary Underwater Projects' tells the history of the black community of St. Paul in Norfolk and how the various levels of government have joined in a regentrification plans for their historic district.

Actor and comedian, Wanda Sykes, a native of Norfolk, narrates Underwater Projects and gives a crash course of its racist pass, how the housing project came about, the decisions behind the sea wall or lack of a sea surrounding their housing project.

AAFCA to Reveal 16th Annual Awards Winners on Dec. 9th, Celebration on Feb. 19th

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 19, 2024 – The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) will announce the winners of its 16th Annual AAFCA Awards on Dec. 9, AAFCA President and co-founder Gil Robertson announced today. Additionally, the organization will announce its annual Top 10 films of the year list on this date. An invitation-only celebration of the winners will follow on Feb. 19 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills, honoring outstanding achievements in cinema with a special focus on films and performances representing the Black diaspora. Four special achievement honorees will be announced later this year.
