“An  entertaining and thought-provoking exploration of the intersection of art, technology and human intuition” - CPH:DOX

THE COMPUTER ACCENT is a documentary following the boundary-pushing pop group YACHT as they try something terrifying and new: handing over the reins of their entire creative process to ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. Working with technologists and leading AI researchers, YACHT uses cutting-edge data analysis tools, machine learning, neural networks, sci-fi instruments, and generative composition strategies to create a new kind of human-machine album—music, lyrics, artwork, videos, and all. Putting AI to the test in the name of art, YACHT are guides through the brave new world of machine intelligence. Along the way, they’ll question their own roles in a future where software anticipates, generates, and synthesizes human work.

Sebastian Pardo and Riel Roch-Decter founded MEMORY  at the start of 2014 and together have produced and distributed award-winning fiction and non-fiction films. They have collaborated with multi-hyphenate filmmakers and artists to bring their debut films to fruition, such as: Celia Rowlson-Hall’s MA, Carson Mell’s ANOTHER EVIL, Dean Fleischer-Camp’s FRAUD, Theo Anthony’s RAT FILM, Marnie Ellen Hertzler’s CRESTONE and Zia Anger’s MY FIRST FILM project. In 2016, MEMORY was named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s 25 New Faces of Independent Film, and in 2020 MEMORY was awarded the Cinereach Producing Award for their work in “shaping new ways of filmmaking.” MEMORY’s latest production, Theo Anthony’s ALL LIGHT, EVERYWHERE won a Special Jury Prize for Non-Fiction Experimentation at Sundance 2021. THE COMPUTER ACCENT, which world premiered at CPH:DOX 2022, is their debut feature film as a directing team.

YACHT  began in 2002, as the design studio Young Americans Challenging High Technology, but the group is neither young nor American. For 20 years, Jona Bechtolt, Claire L. Evans and Robert Kieswetter have shape-shifted through multiple lineups and musical styles, releasing albums internationally on DFA RECORDS and DOWNTOWN RECORDS. YACHT have created and sold unplayable compact discs, published a philosophical handbook, built a 62-foot video installation for Dolby, designed an eyewear collection, created a fragrance, campaigned against NSA surveillance, programmed large- scale public art activations, and have been commissioned to speak, curate, and perform by organizations including THE GETTY CENTER, ADOBE, TEDx, WIRED, MOMA LACMA, RHIZOME, VICE, and more. Their seventh album, Chain Tripping,  was nominated for a GRAMMY Award for Best Immersive Audio Album.

Directed by: C.B. Stockfleth

Produced by: Lance Bangs (Jackass , Portlandia)

Edited & Produced by: Greg King (Other Music)

Executive Produced by: Rob Hatch-Miller (Other Music)

Starring: Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Apples in Stereo, Elf Power, Of Montreal, Beulah, The Gerbils, Dressy Bessy, The Minders, The Music Tapes, Great Lakes,  Elijah Wood, James Mercer (The Shins), Danger Mouse, David Cross and many more.

The film also features never-before-seen additional footage of the bands, shot by filmmaker Lance Bangs.

THE ELEPHANT 6 RECORDING CO. shares the unique inside story of the collective creative evolution behind the sounds of 1990s psychedelic rock bands Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, and The Apples in Stereo-- the founding groups behind the Elephant 6 collective, as well as a host of other artists -- with inspirational resonance for today’s music makers, and music lovers everywhere.

Around 1985, a group of Ruston, Louisiana area high schoolers began experimenting with whatever random instruments and gear they could lay their hands on. Moving to other small college towns including Denver, Colorado and Athens, Georgia, their musical coming of age coincides with the new consumer availability of old-school 4 and 8 track recording technology and cassette tapes. Sharing like-minded sensibilities, influenced by past sounds and psychedelia, and with little to distract them, their efforts to create whole new musical worlds become the bands Olivia Tremor Control,  Neutral Milk Hotel and The Apples in Stereo and many more. While the collective grew to a natural breaking point, its founding members overcame obstacles and remained closely bonded, reuniting for tours and still collaborating today.

THE ELEPHANT 6 RECORDING CO. provides insight into this revolutionary era of popular independent music in America, the defiant DIY spirit in music making, and championing the integrity of an authentic quest for artistic expressiveness over the more mainstream image of being a “successful” musician in our fame obsessed times.

C.B. STOCKFLETH is a filmmaker currently based in New Orleans, LA. He grew up in Central Kentucky and dropped out of high school. He eventually went to film school at Full Sail University in Orlando. 2022 FESTIVAL RUNS NOVEMBER 16TH -20TH

Key West, FL October 18, 2022 — The Key West Film Festival announced today the recipient of its seventh annual Golden Key for Excellence in Costume Design, honoring BAFTA nominated costume designer Jennifer Johnson.

Johnson's most recent artistry can currently be seen in Andrew Dominik’s Blonde (Netflix) starring Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe.

As part of the honor, Johnson will participate in a discussion of her work, to be moderated by Tomris Laffly of Variety. Ms. Johnson will accept her award in person at the festival, which will feature a pre-recorded presentation by Oscar nominated Costume Designer, Dr. Deborah Nadoolman Landis.

Costume Designer JENNIFER JOHNSON received the 2018 Costume Designers Guild Award for Excellence in Contemporary Film for her work on I, Tonya (KWFF, 2017), for which she also received a BAFTA Award nomination. She most recently designed the costumes for Andrew Dominik’s Blonde.

Among her additional feature film credits are Miranda July’s Kajillionaire, Mike Mills’ 20th Century Women (KWFF, 2016) and Beginners as well as David Slade’s Hard Candy, Chloe Sevigny’s directorial debut short film Kitty and Yorgos Lanthimos short film Nimic. For television, Johnson designed costumes for director Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2018 series Too Old To Die Young. A member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Johnson also has collaborated on commercials and/or music videos with directors such as Spike Jonze, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris, Terrence Malick  and John Hillcoat, among others. Her advertising and editorial clients include Nike, Mui Mui, Mercedes,Apple, Purple Fashion, I-D, Vogue, VICE and New York Times. A native of New Mexico, Johnson was born in Taos and raised in Las Cruces. She currently lives in Los Angeles.

Dr. Landis, a former Costume Design Governor of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences and an Academy Award®-nominee, presented the first annual Golden Key for costume design in 2016 to Mary Zophres, who went on to receive an Oscar® nomination for her work in La La Land, and to the last five year’s honorees: Mark Bridges, who won the 2018 Oscar® for Best Costume Design for The Phantom Thread; and Alexandra Byrne, who’s work in Mary Queen of Scots was recognized by an Academy Award nomination; Arianne Phillips, nominated for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood; Francine Jamison-Tanchuck for  her artistry in Regina King’s One Night in Miami; and Paul Tazewell, whose costume design of West Side Story garnered him an Oscar nomination as well.

Michael Tuckman, Director of Programming of the Key West Film Festival, commented"What makes “Blonde” such an enthralling movie is the artistry of the costume design that Jennifer Johnson creates, allowing the actors to truly embrace and develop their characters. She has been doing this at the highest level for two decades now, as audiences at the Key West Film Festival have seen in official selections that featured her work previously like “I, Tonya” and “20th Century Women.” We are so honored that she will be able to join us and share the wisdom behind her craft with festival-goers.”

es-keyart_600x800_clean

Confronted with government denunciations and human rights violations against their spiritual practice, a group of Chinese activists executes a bold and perilous plan to hack into state television.

In March 2002, a state TV signal in China is hijacked by members of banned spiritual group Falun Gong. Their goal is to counter the government narrative about their practice.

In the aftermath, police raids sweep Changchun City, and comic book illustrator Daxiong (Justice League, Star Wars), a Falun Gong practitioner, is forced to flee. He arrives in North America, blaming the hijacking for worsening a violent repression. But his views are challenged when he meets the lone surviving participant to have escaped China, now living in Seoul, South Korea.

Combining present-day footage with 3D animation inspired by Daxiong’s art, Eternal Spring retraces the event on its 20th anniversary, and brings to life an unprecedented story of defiance, harrowing eyewitness accounts of persecution, and an exhilarating tale of determination to speak up for political and religious freedoms, no matter the cost.

Justice for Amanda Todd, Sextortion Victim Who’s Unsealed Case is Focused on in 1091 Pictures Timely Documentary “Sextortion: The Hidden Pandemic” from Filmmaker Maria Peek

Picture1

The case featured in the film was declassified by (HSI) right before this film, comparable in scope to the case featured in the critically acclaimed “Spotlight.” It’s important to note the difference between human trafficking (cases in the hundreds of thousands), and sextortion (cases in the tens of millions) – as sextortion is 1,000 times more prevalent, and is often the precursor to trafficking. 1 in 4 kids are affected or know someone who has been affected by sextortion.

Through partnerships with the Department of Justice and Homeland Security, the filmmaking team had unique unrestricted access to all government documents for an international sextortion case of a Top Gun pilot with hundreds of victims, unsealed for this film for the very first time. By interviewing survivors and their parents, this true crime piece exposes this fastest growing crime against children, the tactics of online predators, and the voices of parents and law enforcement poised to stop online child exploitation in its tracks. Through interviews with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), “Sextortion: The Hidden Pandemic” shows the scale of online enticement and exploitation of children-- and what we can do to stop it.  The filmmakers created an online educational curriculum in partnership with  NCMEC, which is available at https://www.missingkids.org/netsmartz.  This curriculum will be available to educators, parents, federal agents and police departments, and is age-appropriate for middle and high school students.

Featured Expert Interview Subjects in the Film:

Wes Nance (Commonwealth Attorney, Bedford, Virginia)

Addiction is an all-encompassing force, in not only of the lives of the afflicted, but also those around them. OUR AMERICAN FAMILY provides an honest, unfiltered look at a close-knit Philadelphia family dealing with generational substance abuse. Captured at a pivotal “nothing to lose” moment, for over the course of a year, five family members tired of life with addiction on center stage, each struggle to transcend their crippling histories.

What will it take to shift this entrenched, wrenching pattern in their lives? Will they be able to make significant shifts to help their next generation? The members of  OUR AMERICAN FAMILY  invite us into their lives to find hope and to explore what’s possible. Though they often falter, their familial loyalty is powerful, demonstrating how through love and dedication people can rise out of the deepest depths. For a touching, eye-opening look into one of America's most pressing crises, look no further.

OUR AMERICAN FAMILY opens in September timed to National Recovery Month, a national observance held every September to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the emergence of a strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and community members across the nation who make recovery in all its forms possible.

Michael Tuckman, Director of Programming of the Key West Film Festival commented: "Chris Cooper’s resume over the last five decades is itself a chapter in film history. To be able to honor him, in conjunction with a screening of perhaps the most definitive Florida film ever made, is an honor beyond words, and we are thrilled that he and Marianne will be able to join us. The Inspection is a true showcase of cinema both breaking boundaries and claiming one’s voice, and the work behind the camera from Mr. Bratton establishes an artist who will drive cinema for years to come.”
