"Boi de Conchas (The Shell Covered Ox)"

While mourning her missing sister, Rayane balances helping her fisherman father and practicing for the school's music festival – provided she doesn't become an ox first, a misfortune assailing several teenagers in the area.

About the Filmmaker: Prolific critically acclaimed, award winning filmmaker and Slamdance alumni, Daniel Barosa is no stranger to the world stage with films released in both Argentina & Brazil. Embracing the history, culture and traditions of Bertioga, Brazil, the film's location, Barosa explores the societal evolution of Brazil inspired by the powerful folklore tale with its metaphors – talking about grief and depression through the eyes of a younger generation. A cinematic sibling to “The Happening,” Barosa shows audiences and Hollywood that he is a filmmaker to watch.

About The Film and it’s Folklore Origins: Boi de Conchas borrows its title from a folkloric manifestation born in Ubatuba, Brazil, about an Ox named Ratambufe. The animal longed to see the ocean, but its owner consistently failed to fulfill his promise. Ratambufe eventually flees into the sea to escape its actual fate: the slaughterhouse. Brazil is the country of the future that never arrives and is one of the largest cattle producers in the world. Thus, this tale acquires a curious note, not to say sad.

Fast-forward a couple of years. Intense crises in Brazil permeate the social, political, and economic spheres. Emotional distance has become the norm, depression among young people is a way of life, and extreme principles govern adults. However, nothing explains the mysterious cases of teenagers who disappear and, as gossip has it, turn into oxen.

Despite this austere world, Rayane remains determined to honor her missing sister's memory. This story is about grief, using a fantasy premise to draw attention to issues such as depression, broken homes, and the challenges Brazil faces in the post-pandemic world. The film conjectures, with a small dose of humor, what might come to be – internet data becomes currency, prescription medication becomes candy, and teenagers become so resigned to their fate that they resemble silent oxen grazing in the fields.

Musical Influences for the Film & Soundtrack: Most of the music we hear in the film is from the Brazilian death metal band Krisiun. The band was formed in the 90's and since then gathered a cult following, touring Europe, the U.S. and releasing 9 studio albums. Signed with Century Media, they were incredibly generous to let us use some of their songs in the short. Their music potentializes the protagonist's state of mind: despite the calm exterior, a raging storm roars inside.

iThe additional original score was beautifully performed by Thiago Klein, a talented musician who's played in the bands Quarto Negro and Yatho. He was one of the main characters in the musical documentary GRU-PDX, which is also directed by Daniel Barosa. That film takes a deep dive into the eclectic music scene in Portland, Oregon, while the band Quarto Negro records their first studio album in the city. The film has interviews with bands and musicians from The Dandy Warhols, Portugal. The Man, Menomena, and Lumineers.

Genre: Fantasy, Comedy
Rating: PG-13
Country: United States

Connecting to the little girl in us all

Director Greta Gerwig brings Barbie (Margot Robbie, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon and more) to life in her hilarious new film and at the same time deals with so many of the same issues faces your girls and women regarding their looks, body weight and shapes and trying to be all things to all people.

In her quest to save the very existence of herself and BarbieLand, she encounters Gloria (America Ferrera) and her daughter Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt) in the real world and Ruth Handler, creator of Barbie in BarbieLand.

After the screening, I had a opportunity to ask America, “from your first film at 17 to today, what are the most important things you have learned on your journey?”

Something that really stood out was her saying, she is not in competition with Eva Longoria, Jennifer Lopez and others. That there is room for all of them.

As I was leaving, the moderator of the conversation, Clayton Davis, gave me the best compliment I could ever want as a journalist, he said, “that was a great question.” His kind words are the fuel to keep me going. Thank you, Clayton.

The Mattel CEO (Will Ferrell) is a humorous yet sexist executive who is all in on a patriarchal society. His ideas of inclusion are outlandish and at the same time a reflection of what some men believe and feel. The narration of the film by Helen Mirren provides critical insight into the film’s characters and makes a huge difference in its storyline.

Believe in yourself. Find what is important to you, not what societies says you should do.

Greta’s direction does a wonderful job of balancing the fantasy of Barbie with real world issues. Giving you great entertainment and things to consider.

Cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto captures the essence of all that is shiny, plastic, and good about Barbie.

The writing Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach gives an honest dialogue about things that are of concern to young girls, teens, and adult women that it is very relatable while giving you space for joy and laughter.

Editor Nick Houy work allows the storyline to flow effortlessly throughout the film.

Costume Designer Jacqueline Durran       creations brings everything you every loved about Barbie’s clothing and accessories to life size and ready to wear.

Production designer Sarah Greenwood    has a major influence on all things Barbie in the film. It creates the world of Barbie, the cars, the homes, and the beach.

When on her quest to life in the real world, it couldn’t be a Barbie movie without going to Los Angeles and the home of Barbie, the Mattel Headquarters. It brings the story full circle.

The music by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt is impressive. Their scores were well placed in the scenes and added great humor. Barbie has great soundtrack that will have you wanting to dance in your seat.

What stands out to me is the search for a little girl that is a search for the little girl in each of us. A great film for the entire family to enjoy. Must see.

The Pan African Film and Arts Festival Anounces 2024 Launch of John Singleton Short Film Competition

OFFICIAL PAFF 2024

The Pan African Film Festival (PAFF) announces their call for submissions for their second season of their screenwriting competition, the John Singleton Short Film Competition. Three three filmmakers will be awarded $20,000 each for the production and completion of a live-action narrative short film of their winning screenplays. Submissions open January 6 and close on Feb. 19.

Inspired by the legacy of the Los Angeles-born and legendary filmmaker, John Singleton, PAFF’s short film competition is the result of a partnership between the City of Los Angeles and the Pan African Film Festival.

“We’re committed to fostering inclusivity and amplifying Black voices in film,” said Sherri G. Sneed, the competition’s executive producer. “Our program aims to empower emerging Black Filmmakers, providing not just a grant but resources, support and a platform to share powerful narratives. Together, we will enrich the cinematic landscape with diverse stories that resonate globally.”

John Singleton’s films are known for centering on Black characters with humanizing stories about the often-routine circumstances and individuals in society that were mostly ignored or exploited beyond the point of recognition. The goal of the competition is to encourage and ignite Black filmmakers who desire to continue that commitment in their creative approach by providing them with the financial resources to write, direct, and produce an original and innovative film that echoes the cultural contributions of John Singleton.

“Through this partnership with PAFF, we recognize the enduring impact of one of the world’s greatest filmmakers, John Singleton, and the transformative power of storytelling,” said Councilmember Heather Hutt. “We are empowering the next generation of cinematic visionaries, fostering creativity and cultural expression that enriches our city’s vibrant tapestry. Together, we are ensuring that the heart of filmmaking, right here in Los Angeles, continues to beat with innovation, diversity, and boundless possibility.”

Singleton’s mother Sheila L. Ward, “Again, I support the John Singleton Short Film Competition. I thank everyone involved in creating such a needed platform.    My son [John] would be proud.”

“As a first time filmmaker, the John Singleton Short Film Competition allowed me to blossom into a Black woman who learned her strengths as a creative, while also gaining insight about how to become an effective leader in business, added 2021 winner Chelsea Hicks (“Contrban”). “I am so grateful to have been given the opportunity to create a beautiful story in honor of John Singleton’s legacy, and continue to be inspired by what he has accomplished to humanize our stories in film.”

“To walk in the path of John Singleton’s creative legacy is an honor,” 2021 winner TJ Ali (“The Lifted”). “It’s competitions like these that change lives, I’m a testament to that.”

“We are both so thrilled for the John Singleton Short Film Competition to continue,” said Jenesis Scott and Brandon Hammond, whose script for “Amaru” was a winner in 2021.  “The careers this competition can jumpstart going forward is unlimited. We are honored to be a part of that history and excited for this competition to become one of the most coveted awards in film.”
