LOS ANGELES - The Pan African Film & Arts Festival (PAFF) will open with the world premiere of the music comedy “A Hip Hop Story” at its 32nd Opening Night Gala. 15th Annual AAFCA Awards

The African American Film Critic Associations (AAFCA) announced the AAFCA award winners for its 15th annual awards show.

The AAFCA Awards will take place on Feb. 21, 2024, at the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills, CA.

The films that will be recognized films are The Color Purple and American Fiction, highlighting performances from Colman Domingo, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Lily Gladstone and more. The AAFCA also annouced its top 10 films of 2023.

AAFCA president and co-founder Gil Robertson made the announcement: “It’s become a tradition to announce our winners on MLK Day. And what a great year for cinema showcasing the vibrant tapestry of Black storytelling, where diversity is not a trend, but an imperative. This year’s winners have inspired, challenged, and moved us and we are delighted to celebrate them and their cultural impact.”

Dimitri Simakis is a filmmaker, musician, illustrator and co-creator of the found-footage collectives Everything Is Terrible! & the slightly more terrifying, Memory Hole. The EIT! collective has made 8 feature length found-footage films and has toured North America regularly for the past thirteen years. Simakis’ background in immersive storytelling is seen by millions at Pizza Pals Playzone, on permanent exhibition at Meow Wolf’s Convergence Station in Denver, CO. Simakis is currently the Creative Director for GIPHY, the world’s largest GIF library on the internet. Producer Suki-Rose is a director, producer, multidisciplinary artist and co-founder of Spooky Kind Productions alongside Dimitri Simakis. Suki-Rose is a former Disney Imagineer, former creative executive for SpectreVision, videogame designer, miniaturist & fabricator. Her short films (Ding-Dong, Teddy Too-Big, CHOMP) all blend her unique approach to the uncanny and the absurd. “The Rainbow Bridge” is a Sci-Fi fantasy comedy and in many ways a cinematic sibling in spirit to 80’s fantasies like “The NeverEnding Story,” delving deeply into the bonds we have with our pets addressing themes of loss, denial and acceptance, through the lens of one woman’s esoteric journey. The filmmakers tackle such tragic loss through a fantastical, silly and thoroughly entertaining lens. While mourning her missing sister, Rayane balances helping her fisherman father and practicing for the school's music festival – provided she doesn't become an ox first, a misfortune assailing several teenagers in the area.

About the Filmmaker: Prolific critically acclaimed, award winning filmmaker and Slamdance alumni, Daniel Barosa is no stranger to the world stage with films released in both Argentina & Brazil. Embracing the history, culture and traditions of Bertioga, Brazil, the film's location, Barosa explores the societal evolution of Brazil inspired by the powerful folklore tale with its metaphors – talking about grief and depression through the eyes of a younger generation. A cinematic sibling to “The Happening,” Barosa shows audiences and Hollywood that he is a filmmaker to watch.

About The Film and it’s Folklore Origins: Boi de Conchas borrows its title from a folkloric manifestation born in Ubatuba, Brazil, about an Ox named Ratambufe. The animal longed to see the ocean, but its owner consistently failed to fulfill his promise. Ratambufe eventually flees into the sea to escape its actual fate: the slaughterhouse. Brazil is the country of the future that never arrives and is one of the largest cattle producers in the world. Thus, this tale acquires a curious note, not to say sad.

Fast-forward a couple of years. Intense crises in Brazil permeate the social, political, and economic spheres. Emotional distance has become the norm, depression among young people is a way of life, and extreme principles govern adults. However, nothing explains the mysterious cases of teenagers who disappear and, as gossip has it, turn into oxen.

Despite this austere world, Rayane remains determined to honor her missing sister's memory. This story is about grief, using a fantasy premise to draw attention to issues such as depression, broken homes, and the challenges Brazil faces in the post-pandemic world. The film conjectures, with a small dose of humor, what might come to be – internet data becomes currency, prescription medication becomes candy, and teenagers become so resigned to their fate that they resemble silent oxen grazing in the fields.

Musical Influences for the Film & Soundtrack: Most of the music we hear in the film is from the Brazilian death metal band Krisiun. The band was formed in the 90's and since then gathered a cult following, touring Europe, the U.S. and releasing 9 studio albums. Signed with Century Media, they were incredibly generous to let us use some of their songs in the short. Their music potentializes the protagonist's state of mind: despite the calm exterior, a raging storm roars inside.

iThe additional original score was beautifully performed by Thiago Klein, a talented musician who's played in the bands Quarto Negro and Yatho. He was one of the main characters in the musical documentary GRU-PDX, which is also directed by Daniel Barosa. That film takes a deep dive into the eclectic music scene in Portland, Oregon, while the band Quarto Negro records their first studio album in the city. The film has interviews with bands and musicians from The Dandy Warhols, Portugal. The Man, Menomena, and Lumineers.

Confronting Your Past Helps You on the Road to Your Future

Micheal B. Jordan’s directorial debut ‘Creed III” takes you on the emotional journey of Adonis (Michael B, Jordon) and Damian Anderson (Jonatha Majors) as they confront their shared past, while Creed enjoys the fruit of his boxing fame with his wife, Bianca (Tessa Thompson), daughter Amara (Mila Davis-Kent), his mother Mary-Anne (Phylicia Rashad) and a successful boxing gym with Tony 'Little Duke' Burton (Wood Harris), while Dame resentments grows, reaching outrageous proportions.

Refusing to talk about his past traumatic childhood, it reminds us that no matter how much money you make or how many adoring fans you may have, it can not and does not erase the harm, it may cover it up but not go away.
