On Saturday, August 23, 2025, AAFCA hosted its 7th Annual TV Honors at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, CA.

Nneka Onuorah, Horizon Award honoree, got her start in the entertainment business as a BET intern and later, producer for Beverly Bond’s Black Girl. She made her directorial debut film “The Same Difference” about homophobia in the Black community. the producer and director of Megan Thee Stallion: In  Her Own Words. Rocks. In 2022, came the successful Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big Girls.

Michelle Bueteau, winner of the Trailblazer Award, is a multitalented actress, comedian, producer, and more. She is the first female to tape a comedy special at the legendary Radio City Music. Her hilarious debut special earned Michelle the Critics Choice Award for Best Comedy Special.

On Sunday, July 20th, the African American Film  Critics Association and the SAG-AFTRA Foundation hosted the 5th Annual Next Gen Panel at the Meryl Streep Center for the Performing Arts in Los Angeles. The panel of young stars on the rise is DaVinchi, Taylor, Ernest Kingsley Jr.,  Myles Truitt, who all have a bright future ahead.

On Sunday, June 29th, the African American Film Critics Association, in partnership with the Grammy Museum, celebrated Black Music Month with a conversation with Derryck “Big Tank” Thornton and moderated by Nekesa Moody.

As he discussed starting out DJing as a 15-year-old and how his mom worked two jobs and bought his DJ equipment and how he DJd in college, what stood out to me was his love and devotion to his family, his mother, kids, and brother and his commitment to help those coming behind him in the music business. He is a true mentor.

A prolific producer and songwriter, “Big Tank” is known for many successful musical projects, including music composer for The Chi, BMF, The Game, My Wife and Kids, Boondocks, Greenleaf, and much more.

On Thursday, Juneteenth, the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) and American Cinematheque paid  special tribute to celebrated Mara Brock Akil,

The sit-down discussion took place at American Cinematheque’s AERO Theater in Santa Monica, before a packed and engaged audience.     Her film career includes With Honors, Sparkle, The Start Up, Stamped from the Beginning.

Mara’s television career includes: The Sinbad Show, Keep the Faith", South Central, Dave's World, Moesha, The Jamie Foxx Show, Girlfriends, The Game", Leading Women, Cougar Town, Being Mary Jane, Reed Between the Lines         Love Is Yes, "The Vineyard"

And her latest television project on Netflix series Forever that she is executive producing. Mara has won a host of awards NAACP Image Awards, National Association of Television Program Executives, Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award, NAMIC Vision, and SHINE Awards.

Selected by the AAFCA TV HONORS awards committee, these individuals represent a dynamic cross-section of leaders and visionaries making an indelible impact across television and streaming platforms.

Now in its seventh year, the AAFCA TV Honors has become a bellwether event within the entertainment industry—serving as both a celebration and a reflection of the groundbreaking work happening in television and streaming.

This year’s special honorees include:

    • Keith Le Goy, Chairman, Sony Pictures Television – TV Vanguard Award

Le Goy is chairman of Sony Pictures Television (SPT), one of the television industry’s leading content providers. He is responsible for all television production operations, of one of the TV industry’s leading content providers, producing, distributing and carrying programming worldwide in every genre and for every platform.

    • Ayo Davis, President, Disney Branded Television – Salute to Excellence Award

As president of Disney Branded Television, Davis is responsible for producing premium original content for kids and families across Disney+ and Disney Junior. Under her leadership, the network has launched favorites like “Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur,” hit animated series “Bluey,” Disney Jr.’s “Ariel” starring Amber Riley and Taye Diggs, and “Descendants: The Rise of Red” starring Brandy and Rita Ora. Having spent over two decades at Disney—starting in casting before moving into content—Davis has made her mark.

    • Tina Perry, President, OWN TV – Visionary Award

Perry has served as President of OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network since 2019, overseeing all creative and operational aspects of the network, reporting directly to OWN Chairwoman and CEO Oprah Winfrey and Warner Bros. Television Group and US Networks Chairwoman and CEO Channing Dungey. Under her leadership, OWN has solidified its role as a leading destination for Black audiences.  The network continues to dominate Friday and Saturday nights among African American viewers with hit series such as Love & Marriage: HuntsvilleFamily or Fiance, and Ready to Love. Over the past year, OWN’s average premiere ratings among Black women aged 25-54 have increased by 6%.

    • Mara Brock Akil, Producer/Screenwriter – Legacy Award

A groundbreaking television writer and producer, Akil’s work has shaped modern Black storytelling on TV. Her work includes writing for “South Central,” and becoming the youngest African-American showrunner at 30 with her hit series “Girlfriends.” Additional projects include “The Game,” “Being Mary Jane,” and “Black Lightning.” Brock Akil’s most current series, “Forever,” just debuted on Netflix.

    • Michelle Buteau, Actress/Comedian – Trailblazer Award

Comedian, actress, producer, and podcast host, Buteau is known for her bold humor. She began stand-up in 2001 after working as a TV news producer in New York. Her big break came five years later on Comedy Central. Named one of Esquire’s "comedians to watch" in 2017, she went on to host the “Late Night Whenever!” podcast and Netflix’s “The Circle.” Her comedy special, “Welcome to Buteaupia,” earned a 2021 Critics' Choice Award. In 2020, she published “Survival of the Thickest,” later adapted into a Netflix series. She starred in the 2024 film “Babes.”

    • Nneka Onuorah, Producer/Director – 2025 Horizon Award

Onuorah is an Emmy-winning film director and producer known for bold, socially resonant storytelling. The winner of a Primetime Emmy for directing “Lizzo's Watch Out for the Big Grrrls,” her most recent Prime Video project, “Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Own Words” spotlights the superstar rapper's rise to fame.

    • Denise Nicholas – 2025 TV Icon Award

Denise Nicholas is a renowned actress and author, best known for her roles in films like “Let’s Do it Again” (1975) and “Capricorn One” (1977) as well as her TV roles on “In the Heat of the Night” and “Room 222.” She is also the author of the novel “Freshwater Road” and has received several accolades for her writing, including the Best First Novel Award from the American Library Association’s Black Caucus. She got her start on stage touring with the Free Southern Theater through the rural South during the Civil Rights Movement.

The annual celebration of the best of television will take place at the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel

LOS ANGELES, March 24, 2025 – The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) has set the date for the 7th Annual AAFCA TV Honors for August 23, 2025. The prestigious awards ceremony, celebrating excellence in television, is returning to the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel.

The AAFCA TV Honors recognizes outstanding achievements in television, highlighting diverse storytelling and performances that resonate with audiences worldwide. The event has become a cornerstone of the television awards season, honoring both established and emerging talent.

"We are excited to once again celebrate the incredible talent and creativity that defines television today," said Gil Robertson, AAFCA president and co-founder. "The AAFCA TV Honors provides a platform to recognize the impactful narratives and performances that reflect the richness of the Black experience. We look forward to another year of honoring the best in television."

The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) Announces the AAFCA 2024 Special Achievement Awards Recipients: Jamie Foxx, Datari Turner, Fatima Robinson, Michael Latt, Deon Taylor, Killers of the Flower Moon and Delta Airlines

Awards will be handed out at the 7th Annual AAFCA Special Achievement Awards Luncheon on March 3rd at the Los Angeles Athletic Club

AAFCA will also be celebrating the AAFCA Awards recognizing outstanding achievement in film its annual celebration on February 21st. Winners of the AAFCA Awards will be announced January 15.

LOS ANGELES, January 11, 2024 – The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) is proud to reveal its esteemed list of 2024 Special Achievement Honorees chosen for their prolific contributions to the entertainment industry. These outstanding honorees will be celebrated at the organization’s 7th Annual AAFCA Special Achievement Awards luncheon, taking place on Sunday, March 3rd in the Centennial Room at the Los Angeles Athletic Club in downtown Los Angeles.

The intimate, invitation-only luncheon will bestow honors upon the feature film “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which will receive the Stanley & Karen Kramer Social Justice Award for shining a light on the true story of the infamous Osage Nation murders.

Jamie Foxx and Datari Turner, the producing duo behind Foxxhill Productions, will be honored with AAFCA’s Producers Award for their exceptional work on three high-profile films released in 2023: "They Cloned Tyrone," "Story Ave," and "The Burial,” along with Foxxhill’s commitment to telling inclusive stories.
Renowned choreographer Fatima Robinson will be presented with AAFCA’s Salute to Excellence Award, recognizing her outstanding contributions to the art of choreography, including her work on "The Color Purple."

The late Michael Latt will receive the inaugural Freedom Award, established in his honor, recognizing his legacy as an exceptional marketing strategist, thought leader, and founder of Lead With Love. His passionate advocacy for amplifying underrepresented stories and using art to foster hope, understanding and healing among communities through the cinematic arts will be celebrated at the event with his family accepting the honor on his behalf.

Filmmaker Deon Taylor will be honored with the Horizon Award which spotlights and celebrates a talent on the rise. Already an established filmmaker, known for founding Hidden Empire Film Group and directing genre-bending thrillers like “Chain Letter” and “Traffik,” Taylor’s upcoming projects include “Free Agents” for Tristar and biopics on civil rights activist and congressman John Lewis and boxer Floyd Mayweather.
Finally, Delta Airlines will be honored with AAFCA’s Film Advocate Award in recognition of their commitment to diversity in entertainment offered aboard Delta flights and embracing emerging filmmakers with their programming.

"Our list this year includes titans and trailblazers whose work has transformed the cinematic arts," states AAFCA President and Co-Founder Gil Robertson. "Their work leaves us in awe of their incredible achievements and inspires us to move forward in all our endeavors with passion, creativity and determination. Recipients of the AAFCA Special Achievement Awards are carefully selected by a committee and chosen based on their contributions throughout their careers. These honorees represent excellence both behind and in front of the camera, including executives, journalists, actors, crafts artists, and filmmakers.
Previous AAFCA Special Achievement Awards honorees include Ruth Carter, Jason Blum, Edward James Olmos, Pearlena Igbokwe, Channing Dungey, Sherry Lansing, John M. Chu, and Wesley Morris, among others.
